Frequently Asked Questions
How does the bill split calculator work?
Enter your bill's subtotal, set the tax and tip, then add everyone in your group. In Equal mode, the total is divided evenly. In Uneven mode, enter what each person ordered and tax and tip are calculated automatically based on each share. In Itemized mode, add each menu item and assign it to whoever ordered it — shared items split automatically.
How do I split a bill when someone has a birthday?
Tap the cake icon next to the birthday person's name. Their total becomes $0 and their share is redistributed proportionally among everyone else in the group.
Can I split a bill by individual items?
Yes. Switch to Itemized mode, add each menu item with its price, and assign it to whoever ordered it. Shared items are split evenly among the assigned people. Tax and tip are calculated proportionally based on each person's item total.
How do I share the bill split with my group?
Tap Copy Summary to copy a clean text breakdown to your clipboard, ready to paste in your group chat. Or tap Share Link to generate a short URL that opens the calculator with your exact split pre-filled.
How do I handle tax and tip when splitting a bill?
Enter the bill subtotal, then set the tax percentage and tip percentage. In Equal mode, tax and tip are split evenly. In Uneven and Itemized modes, tax and tip are distributed proportionally — whoever ordered more pays a larger share of the tax and tip.
What is the difference between pre-tax and post-tax tip?
Pre-tax tip calculates the tip on the subtotal only. Post-tax tip calculates the tip on the subtotal plus tax. Use the Pre-tax / Post-tax toggle to choose which method your group prefers. The default is pre-tax.
Can I split a bill when people ordered different things?
Yes. Use Uneven mode to enter each person's subtotal manually, or use Itemized mode to add each menu item and assign it to whoever ordered it. Both modes calculate tax and tip proportionally based on what each person ordered.
How do I split shared appetizers or dishes?
In Itemized mode, add the shared dish as an item and assign it to everyone who shared it. The cost is split evenly among the assigned people, and their proportional share of tax and tip adjusts accordingly.
Does the bill splitter work for large groups?
Yes. There is no limit on group size. Add as many people as needed. The summary shows each person's total including their share of tax and tip, ready to copy and paste into your group chat.
